Big breakfast with Deep Purple (behind the scenes)

Watch out for cameras or you will end up on TV

Suddenly I hear a alarm clock 4.45 am in the morning.
4 hour sleep was not enough. But what a hell, what
aren’t you doing for a Deep Purple gig. After a short
breakfast, me and my friends left the hotel. We took
a taxi to Channel 4 TV studio. We arrived just before
6 am, one hour before the morning show, Big Breakfast
started. We were on the guest list as Houseguests so
we could walk right in. The location of this studio was
not as I expected. It looked like a villa with a garden in
a factory area.

7 am and Deep Purple kickstart with "Smoke On The water"

Very nice place. I got a feeling of a home instead of a
TV studio. We had a walk around the garden and
stayed at the front of the house were Deep Purple's
equipment were. It’s not every day you stand that
close. It was not so many people there, just a few
from the Deep Purple crew and the camera guys.
We had a cup of coffee there, so we really woke up.
Suddenly all the guys in Deep Purple are walking out
of the house to the terrace were their equipment were.
They start to rehearsal “Black Night” and
“Smoke On The Water”.
I couldn’t believe it. There I am 6 am in the morning,
at a TV studio in central London and my all time
favorite band do a rehearsal just a few meters from
were I stand. Am I dreaming, nope, I was awake.
I thought it would be to early for rock music but it’s
never to early for Deep Purple. It was a kind of a
chilly morning, so they went in to the house after the
rehearsal. 6.30 they let the audience in. It was
probably around 70 – 80 fans who were there.
Deep Purple came back and did some more
rehearsals, (Deep Purple did probably all these
rehearsals just for the TV crew) sign albums and
chat with fans.

Deep Purple in the TV studio

It was a very nice and warm feeling there, even if it
was a chilly morning. 7 am and the morning show
started with “Smoke On The Water”. What a blast.
It was just great to see them at the terrace in the garden.
Then they went in to the house for a interview.
Later they came back and played “Black Night”, then
back in the house for some competition. Me and my
friends walked into the house to see the show from there.
Suddenly I have a camera in my face and me and
my friends are on British TV. The time was running
very fast and Deep Purple went out to the terrace
to play “Smoke On the Water” one more time.
The audience were wild, in fact everybody who were
there were wild.

Jon Lord and myself with a few others

I had never thought that you can get 100 people go nuts
that time of a day. But of course, this was not a normal
situation, this was Deep Purple who played the most
famous hard rock song in the music history. The time
was 9 am and the show was over. Deep Purple stayed
for a short while to sign some more albums, chat with
fans and pose for pictures.

Those guys are not only great musicians they are also
very nice and friendly.

Deep Purple rocks at Wembley arena

9.30 and it was time to get back to the hotel. We were
tired but very happy and the best thing of all, we had a
Deep Purple concert to catch that night at Wembley arena.

A big thanks to Deep Purple and my dear friends Doug, Stephen and Margaret.

Take care
Benny Holmstrom
