True Stories Concerning Drinking and Driving |
| A 17 year-old boy, tells us a frightening story about not being able to
control his driving, because of alcohol. "We had been to a great party in Bara, and we had also been drinking a lot. When the party was over, we had to get home, but there were no busses to Malmoe in the middle of the night. We went around Bara, trying to find some kind of transport home. We could not find anything, and we became more and more desperate. Eventually, we tried to find a car to break into. Still, we were very drunk. We found a Saab, and from old experience we knew that Saabs are easy to open with only a screwdriver. My friend knew how to hot-wire the car. It took quite a long time, because our hands were too clumsy. We sat down in the car and I started to drive. I am still surprised that we could start the car at all, when I think about our condition at that time. I did not know if the lights I saw or the sounds I heard were real, it was all like a dream. A nightmare. We were lucky there were no cars on the road, at least I do not remember any. It could have ended up in a disaster. It felt like sitting behind a diffuse cloud. You have no idea at all about what is happening around you. I have a strong impression that we somehow smashed with the car in a ditch. We did not manage to stay on the road. Still, today I do not know which way we went or where we left the car. I know we drove into something, but it might also be a fantasy that became reality when we sobered up. I know we had been driving the car, because others from the party had seen us. The days after the incident we watched the news and read the newspapers to see if anyone had noticed some kind of accident. The uncertainty can make you go insane, but both I and my friend learned a lesson for life." Getting kicks in the traffic is more dangerous than you might think. Not only kicks caused by drugs or alcohol, but adrenaline kicks too. |
