If the prevention doesn't succeed

Most traffic accidents are related to alcohol. This concerns all types of vehicles. Many boat accidents are due to alcohol and high speed. To decrease the numbers of accidents the traffic sobriety has to increase.

Drunken drivers are often convicted of new traffic crimes when they have served their sentence. To prevent this, it is necessary for the driver to undergo a treatment. Usually they get probation. That is an appropriate measure to get the driver into a treatment work. Immediately when a drunken driver has been caught he will be invited to go through a course. The one who has made him-/herself guilty of drunken driving must set his problems with alcohol to work. In case of refusal the drunken driver will get imprisonment, even if no accident has occurred.

It's never too late to interrupt an addiction to alcohol and narcotics. There are no impossible cases. But the longer you wait with the applications the harder it will be for the addict to break him-/herself off the habit of taking drugs. If the application will be successful the addict him-/herself must have the power, the will and the possibility to go through a treatment.

The County Government Board, the treatment of offenders and the social security work together with different treatment programs. There are also non-profit-making associations like IOGT and NTO working for a society without alcohol.

Comradeship, being together and an active spare time counteracts abuse. This is what most treatment programs are about.

"Rattfällan" is a course program for condemned drunken drivers. It is voluntary, which means that the attenders in "Rattfällan" really want to get rid of their addiction to alcohol. That can be one of the reasons that the follow-up of the program during a period of four years shows that those who have participated in "Rattfällan" don't perpetrate as many traffic crimes, after they have served their sentence, as others do. The follow-up also shows that most people who have a recurrence are between 25 and 44 years old.

"Rattfällan" has existed in Sweden since the middle of the eighties.
