Gary Hobson, an out of work stockbroker is thrown out by his wife; she wants a divorce. Gary begins to get the paper a day early when he moves into the Blackstone hotel. On his first test of the paper (at the Horse Tracks), he wins $10, 000 and gives it to his friend Marissa Clark, so she can buy a seeing eye dog. Gary's friend Chuck Fishman want to use the paper to get rich quick, but the paper shows Gary that it's a responsibility, not a privilege. Gary stops a bank robbery but decides he doesn't want the burden of the paper. He tries to move away to the middle of nowhere, but finds the paper follows him anyways.
The paper predicts two separate accidents, a little girl being a victim of hit and run; and a plane crash, killing hundreds. But when Gary tries to get the girl to the hospital quickly, he learns that the paper won't let him off that easy. It now predicts that the girl will become a victim of hospital neglect, so Gary has to choose between the life of a small girl and the hundreds of lives on board the plane.
The Paper predicts that Chuck will deliver a baby in an elevator, so Chuck desperately tries to avoid pregnant women al day. Meanwhile, Gary is entranced by a mysterious Blonde who shows up all over the city, but when he tries to meet her through a picture in the paper, he misses his chance.
When Gary investigates where his paper comes from, he's led to the offices of the Chicago Sun-Times, and down to the archives. There he meets Morris, who lets him know more about his predecessor, Lucius Snow. Gary's only got one problem - he's falling in love with the paper's star reporter, Meridith Carson, and she just can't wait to look at his paper.
Gary attempts to deal with the headline reading "Thief Swipes Mayor's Dog", and befriends Chuck's weird Uncle Phil in the process. But, to Gary's chagrin, the only thing on Chuck's mind is a 20 Million Dollar Lottery Jackpot.
When the paper tells of a high school basketball star with a heart condition, Gary ventures into Marissa's old neighborhood. He finds the basketball star less than concerned for his heath, considering he has a younger brother to support. Marissa is reunited with an old boyfriend.
A story about an abandoned baby and another about a young mother's suicide puts Gary out in the rain, searching for the two. But when he learns the true story behind the mother and her child, he's got to save them both, before it's too late.
The paper tells a story about a young boy killing his brother with a handgun, which leads Gary to a single mother with a very vindictive husband, and has Gary playing social worker to this troubled family, before the son, and the mother are murdered. Back at the Blackstone, Chuck learns that cats hate taking baths.
Meridith Carson returns to Gary's life, and professes that she loves him too much to let the paper stand between them. But the temptation proves too much for her and for Chuck, and when they take a crucial part of Gary's paper, he has to comb the city, and make the hard choice when Meridith leaves for Washington.
When the paper tells Gary that his ex-wife Marcia is marrying his ruthless ex- boss, Gary attempts to gain closure in his former relationship. Things go awry when he accidentally injures Pritchard, and later finds in the paper that Pritchard's going to get murdered. Gary has to choose whether or not he wants to save the man who's caused him so much trouble.
On Christmas Eve, Gary's running around town trying to stop the very same "Teddy Bear Bomber" that the police are. Problem is, the police don't think Gary's much of a help. Meanwhile, Chuck's thrown in jail with a man that looks like and believes he's Santa Claus, and he want's Chuck to help him escape so he can fulfil his Christmas obligations.
Even though Chicago's in a cold spell, the paper still won't let Gary take a day off. But when he tries to get rid of the paper, he's caught with half a story about a homeless boy who's going to freeze to death, but where?
Chuck wants Gary to stay away when the paper predicts that a Mobster's girlfriend is going to get murdered. Things get out of hand when Chuck falls for the girl, and that puts Gary and Chuck between a rock and a hard place - The Mob or the FBI.
With the president coming to town, a Secret Service agent named Dobbs also arrives, and has his sights set on Gary. But Gary has his own problems. The paper's started getting blurred headlines, and he learns through a mysterious photo, that Lucious Snow was at the Kennedy Assassination. All that is put on hold, though, when Gary is framed for the death of Chicago Sun-Times editor Harry Hawkes, which puts Gary on the run.
Trying to lay low, and not get caught, Gary investigates more into the mysterious photo taken when Kennedy was assassinated. He leaves Marissa to find what answers the photo holds, while he investigates and finds that Dobbs isn't who he seems to be.
A new hero shows up in the form of a former Chicago Cop thinking he's Bat Masterson, wild west hero. Gary's got to help Bat and save the people in the paper, all while combating Bat's reluctant psychiatrist. But when Masterson's past catches up to him, Gary has to save Bat, before he kills the man he thinks killed his partner 10 years ago.
Along with months of mail, Gary finds a summons for Jury duty, and his attempts to escape the task fail. Along with 11 other people, Gary has to decide on a man accused of embezzlement. However, after a glance at the paper, Gary's vote is swayed and it becomes his job to expose an elaborate cover-up.
A fraudulent psychic takes an interest in Gary, after he saves her life, but he sluffs her off. However, he soon realizes that she may be more then just another fake, when both she and the paper predict that a child is in danger.
When the Cat shows up sick at Gary's door, his trip to a Veterinarian leads him to the Vet's mother, who has connections to Gary's predecessor; and a deadly secret to hide.
When Gary's saves a museum worker's life, he becomes attracted to her, and they begin dating. But when the paper predicts that she'll reunite with an old flame, Gary has a choice to make - whether to let fate take it's course, or keep the girl for himself.
After a hit and run, Gary's stuck in the hospital, healing from a Head injury. There he meets a young girl, in need of a heart transplant, who teaches him about having faith in the world. Meanwhile, Chuck has to try and fulfil Gary's paper obligations.
Gary's newly retired dad delights in helping prevent bad news, much to Gary's dismay. But when Gary is kidnapped, it's his Dad who has to save him.
Marissa's back at college, and interested in her classmate, Jeffrey. But Gary's also at the college, saving a psychology professor's life, twice. Then Chuck finds that Marissa's new boyfriend is the attempted murderer, Gary must get to Marissa and Jeffrey, before Jeffery murders her!
