I try to read a lot of books, but 90% of them are technical publications. On this page I will publish some thoughts on some of these books.
It should perhaps be noted how I select my litterature. In principle I have three ways used when selecting a book to buy.
I somewhat feel that the reviews in DrDobbs have not always prevented me from buying books that do not meet my requirements. Even though this I often find their reviews very good and certainly much better than the "Great" / "Stinks" style reviews found at the internet bookshops.
| Title | My comments | Source |
| Executable UML - How to build class models | Very good book. A must read for anyone interested in moving to the next level of software development | Rec. |
| Writing Windows secure code | The author of this book is likely employed by Microsoft. It shows how not to build software. Unfortunately everything I found in that book was things that really anyone earning money from software development should know anyway. Don't bother with this book. Go learn software development instead. | DDJ |
| MDA Distilled | Good introduction to Model Drivven Architecture. I'm not sure I like the term MDA itself because it's really about software development. This book should be read by anyone who want to know what the close future has in hand for software developers. | Rev. |
| AI Game Engine Programming | This book was very interesting for the first 100 pages or so. Then it started to get boring. Loads of lists of games where they did this or that way and not good enough. I have put this book aside for a while and will see if I take reading up again later. | DDJ |
| XML For real programmers | ? | |
| XSLT Programmers Reference | This is not the book you can nor should read end to end. Parts of it are a good in depth explanation about XSLT but the best parts are really the reference section on how all these strange XSLT elements work. If you intend to do any work with XSLT at all you should get a copy of this book immediately. | Rev. |
| Advanced Windows | This book tought me many new tricks. Unfortunately I have not had the time to try most of them out. I guess parts of it is a bit outdated by now with the new management features of XP, Active Directory and .NET considered. | Rev. |
| Windows internals I2? (NT3.1,3.5) | Apparenty I like these books since I continue to buy every new issue that come out. I must admit though that I have not yet read the latest issue. | Rec. |
| Windows internals I3? (NT4+5) | - | |
| Windows internals I4? (XP+W2k3) | - | |
