In the year of our Lord, 1150, Arn Magnusson was born in Arnäs in West Gothia. The book "Vägen till Jerusalem" (The road to Jerusalem) is the first of three by author Jan Guillou. Here we are told how the three countrys West Gothia, East Gothia and Svecia was to be united and become what we today call Sverige (Sweden). But also the story of Arn becoming a templar in Jerusalem.
The second book is called "Tempelriddaren" (the Templar) and takes place 10-20 years later in Palestine and Sweden, changing the location from chapter to chapter, telling two parallell storys.
Book three is back in Sweden, and tells the end of this epic story. It´s called "Riket vid vägens slut" (The Realm at the end of the road).

William Gibson

NEUROMANCER/ COUNT ZERO/ MONA LISA OVERDRIVE
Neuromancer is the novel that started it all, launching the cyberpunk generation. With Neuromancer, William Gibson introduced the world to cyberspace -- and science fiction has never been the same.
It´s interresting reading, with great environment descriptions, but somehow... there´s no "point" to the story...
The secret is that the three books are one story with many substorys tangled into one another, and not until I read all three of them, I found the meaning of telling the story at all. I was lucky having bought all three in one volume, or else I wouldn´t have continued reading.

FADO ALEXANDRINO
Five army veterans get together on the 10th anniversary of their homecoming from Portugals colonial war in Mocambique. They start telling eachother their life storys, which all are different, with different backgrounds, but with one thing in common: the sense of failure. The longer the night gets, the more they drink, and the more cynical towards eachother and themselves they get.
A L Antunes writes in a very special way that is hard reading. He constantly jumps from one person's story to another's, from then to now and back again, and at the same time maybe to someone else. Sometimes you are not sure who is saying what or when, or if things take place for real or in someone else's fantasy or memory. And he writes with never ending sentences! Although very colourful and quite humouristic, he tends to write a bit too pessimistic and depressing about all and everything considering Portugal. Maybe his way of writing works better in portugese than in swedish?

This is a brilliant novel that I warmly recommend! Find out how true sf is told at it´s best! Unfortunately Brin isn´t able to keep up to this fantastic standard in his other novels, although most of them are very good!
